Gadar music composer Uttam Singh denies claims of Anil Sharma contacting him before using his songs: ‘Inhone meri creativity le li’

Music composer Uttam Singh did not hide his disappointment with Gadar 2 director Anil Sharma’s treatment of his music. The music composer, who gave the music for the 2001 blockbuster, Gadar Ek Prem Katha, says that the director’s claims of informing him before using two of his songs in the sequel are untrue.

Upon the release of Gadar 2, Uttam accused Anil of using two of his most popular songs ‘Udd Ja Kaale Kaava’ and ‘Main Nikla Gaddi Le Ke’ in the sequel without informing him. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he said that the director had called him and only informed him about re-releasing the original film a few months before the sequel.

On being told that Anil Sharma said that he informed him before using his songs in Gadar 2, Uttam Singh said, “This is wrong. Anil ji didn’t say anything to me. He had called me to his office and when I went there, he informed me that ‘Uttam ji we are re-releasing the original film two months before the original. So, please rework the music’ Whatever the system is of today’s time with the speakers and all. That’s it, I said I will do it.”

The music composer said he went for a second meeting to tell the final budget for reworking the music. He recalled that people from Zee Music, which owns the rights, were also there and were unhappy after listening to the expenses incurred.

Later, Anil took the music composer to another room and made him listen to Gadar 2 song ‘Khairiyat’, which Uttam found untuned. After fixing the song he left and had no other conversation about Gadar 2’s music.

Questioning Anil’s ethics, Uttam said, “If he (Anil) says that he made me hear the songs, then it’s wrong. No permission was taken from me. You take the song, do whatever you want. You say you (have) the rights? Ok agreed but there is something called ethics as well. What is your identity? Gadar. So, Gadar is not just a film, right?”

Uttam Singh has not yet watched the film as he is unhappy with the credit going to Mithoon and the original music’s credit going to Monty Sharma. Calling it “wrong and a matter of great sadness”, the music composer blamed the director as well as the two younger musicians.

Asked what would have been the right approach, Uttam said, “They should have come to me and said, ‘Uttam ji we are using these two songs. You re-tape them. The remaining songs we are taking from Mithoon.’ The songs which are made once, are made forever.”

Reflecting on the matter of royalty and how strict laws exist in the West, Uttam said, “Change can only come after a law is passed. No one can take creativity there. Inhone meri creativity le li.” (They have taken my creativity).
