Dermatologist reviews Deepika Padukone’s classic DIY face mask; is it actually effective?

Deepika Padukone continues to steal hearts with her flawless performances and unparalleled fashion sense. The actor, who also helms a skincare brand, boasts flawless skin, which makes fans eager to discover her beauty secrets. In an interview during the launch of her brand 82E, she opened up about using a DIY face mask.

Deepika said, “I use the classic besan, haldi, and malai face mask.” But is Deepika’s DIY skincare remedy, which has also been used by countless Indians for centuries, really good for your skin?

We turned to Geetika Mittal Gupta, a dermatologist, to know more! “When it comes to skincare, natural ingredients hold the key to a glowing complexion. Deepika Padukone’s go-to DIY face mask is an absolute thumbs up for me,” she wrote on Instagram.

The expert shared why this DIY mask is a must-try:

*Gram flour (Besan): Gram flour helps in exfoliation. Its fine particles gently wash away dead skin cells, unclog pores, and reveal fresh skin underneath.*Turmeric powder (Haldi): Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and brightening properties. It helps combat acne, reduce dark spots, and even out skin tone.*Cream (Malai): Cream brings in the hydration and nourishment your skin needs. It locks in moisture, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple.*Rosewater/Plain water (Optional): Adding a few drops of rosewater or water helps achieve consistency.

Explaining that the effectiveness of this DIY face mask can vary from person to person, depending on their skin type and individual sensitivities, Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinic shared some dos and don’ts you must keep in mind before trying this remedy.

*Patch test: Before applying the mask to your face, do a patch test on a small area of your skin to check for any adverse reactions or allergies.*Clean face: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser before applying the mask to remove any dirt or makeup.*Mix well: Ensure that you mix the ingredients thoroughly to form a smooth paste.*Apply gently: Apply the mask to your face in a gentle, upward motion.*Leave on: Leave the mask on for about 15 to 20 minutes or until it dries.*Rinse off: Use lukewarm water to rinse off the mask, gently massaging in circular motions to exfoliate.*Moisturise: After rinsing, apply a moisturiser to lock in hydration.

*Turmeric stains: Be cautious as turmeric can stain clothing and leave a yellow tint on the skin. Use an old towel and clothing when applying the mask.*Allergies: If you are allergic to any of the ingredients, do not use this mask.*Overuse: Don’t use this mask too frequently — once or twice a week is generally sufficient. Overuse can lead to dryness or irritation.*Avoid sun exposure: After using the mask, it’s a good idea to avoid direct sun exposure for a few hours as turmeric can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Dr Kapoor concluded, “If you have sensitive skin or any skin conditions, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist before trying any homemade remedies. Always listen to your skin and discontinue use if you experience any adverse reactions.”
