Ex-Akali Dal minister house robbery: 3 Nepalese men held; Gold worth 1 cr, watches, cash recovered

Two days after former Akali Dal minister Jagdish Singh Garcha, 88, and his family members were allegedly drugged and their house in Maharaja Ranjit Singh Nagar robbed, the Ludhiana police Wednesday said they have arrested three Nepalese men for the incident.

The police recovered several valuables including gold jewellery worth Rs 1 crore, pearls, silverware, international coins, five branded watches, and Rs 2.76 lakh in cash from the gang. The Ludhiana police said they cracked the case in coordination with the Delhi Police.

Addressing a press conference, Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the conspiracy was hatched by Karan Bahadur, 20, of Dangri in Nepal, whom the Garcha family had employed as domestic help a few months ago.

Sidhu said Karan Bahadur along with his three Nepalese accomplices – Sarjan Shahi, 21, Kishan Bahadur, 31, and David – committed the robbery. David is absconding and a search is on to nab him.

The police officer added that Karan Bahadur had a previous case of theft registered against him at Mandi Gobindgarh in Pubjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district.

“Had the family got his police verification done, this incident would not have happened. We appeal to everyone to get police verification of their domestic workers done before employing them,” said CP Sidhu.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 457 (house-trespass), and 381 (theft by clerk or servant) of the Indian Penal Code at Sadar police station based on the statement of Harjinder Singh, son of the ex-SAD minister.
