Man abducted, stripped, assaulted in Karnataka’s Haveri district for ‘helping’ couple elope

A man in Karnataka’s Haveri district was abducted, stripped and assaulted on Monday for allegedly helping a couple who were in a relationship escape from their village.

This is the second such incident to be reported in the state in the last two days and comes more than a week after the Belagavi case where a 42-year-old woman was paraded naked, tied to an electric pole and assaulted after her son ran off with a woman he was reportedly in love with.

The latest incident took place on Monday evening in Chalageri village of Ranebennur taluk. According to the police, a couple from the village who belonged to the same community were in a relationship. As the families were opposed to it, the duo fled from the village on Monday.

The woman’s parents and kin suspected that the man’s relative, Prashant, helped them run away so they barged into his house, took him away in a car and stripped and assaulted him, the police said. Later, Prashant was dumped in front of the Ranebennur rural police station.

A case has been registered at Halageri police station. The police took him to a nearby hospital and he is said to be out of danger.

Meanwhile, Prashant’s relatives staged a protest in front of Halageri police station demanding the accused be arrested.

Couple assaulted in Chikkaballapura district

In another instance, a man’s parents were assaulted in Chikkaballapura district allegedly because he eloped with a woman he was in a relationship with.

The incident took place in Darpathi village on Sunday night. Manoj, 21, and Ankita, 19, who belong to the Valmiki community, were in a relationship. However, Ankita’s family was against it.

A month ago, Manoj and Ankita fled from the village and tied the knot. Later, they returned to the village and Ankita went home. On Sunday, Ankita’s parents allegedly removed her mangalsutra. This prompted the couple to flee the village on the same night.

Furious, Ankita’s father Srinivas, 53, and his brothers allegedly assaulted Manoj’s parents, father Gangaraju, 45, and Venkatalakshmamma, 43. The villagers shifted the couple to the district hospital where they are undergoing treatment. The police registered a case and arrested Srinivas and his brothers.
