Maya gang leader and associate held for Amazon executive’s murder in Northeast Delhi

The Delhi Police have arrested Mohammad Sameer, alias Maya, the leader of the Maya gang, and his associate in connection with the murder of a 36-year-old senior executive of Amazon in a case of road rage in Northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura.

According to officers Thursday, Sameer, 18, and his associate Bilal Gani, alias Mallu, also 18, were arrested by the Special Cell a day after the crime.

They said Sameer is a criminal in Northeast Delhi and has been previously involved in four murder cases. Sameer, whose gang has at least a dozen members, has at least 2,000 followers on Instagram, and in several of the pictures posted on the platform, he can be seen posing with guns and flashing expensive clothes.

Officers said Maya, Gani, and three others were coming back from a gathering when their two-wheelers brushed past the vehicle of Harpreet and Govind while crossing a narrow lane late on Tuesday. After an argument, Harpreet was shot dead with the bullet piercing his head and Govind sustained gunshot injuries on his ear and is currently undergoing treatment.

According to the police earlier in the day, Gani was apprehended near Signature Bridge at 2 am Thursday.

DCP (Northeast) Joy N Tirkey said, “The main accused, Bilal, turned 18 a few days ago and he was celebrating with his friends. Last year, he was involved in two heinous cases, including a murder in Bhajanpura and a robbery case where he and his associates had robbed a scooty from a person in Bhajanpura. He managed to come out of the juvenile observation home after some time.”

“Gill and Singh were coming from the other side when the accused stopped their bikes. A fight broke out as there was no space in the lane and one bike had to be moved. Bilal became aggressive. His associate, Junaid, got down and slapped Singh. When the victims tried to talk to the boys, the accused fired at the men and fled,” added Tirkey.

Investigators said the accused were identified based on CCTV cameras in the area.
