Unable to repay Rs 3,100 loan, garlic vendor stripped, assaulted in Noida

A 35-year-old garlic vendor in Noida was allegedly stripped and assaulted for being unable to repay a Rs 3,100 loan. Gautam Buddh Nagar police Tuesday arrested two persons, including a commission agent, in connection with the incident.

A purported video of the incident also went viral on social media in which a man can be seen beating up another person, who was naked, with a stick.

The accused are Sunder Singh, a resident of Gaur City, Greater Noida, and Bhagandas, a resident of Shahjahanpur district, UP. The victim, Amit Singh, is from Mainpuri district, UP. Police said the incident took place in Phase 2 police station area.

“The victim, Amit, sells garlic on a cart in Sector 88, Noida sabzi mandi. He had taken a loan of Rs 5,600 from Sundar, who is the commission agent (aadhti) in the mandi. On Monday, Amit returned Rs 2,500 to Sundar and told him that he would soon return the remaining amount. But Sunder called his muneem; (accountant) and two labourers and beat the man up brutally and locked him in a shop. They also stripped the victim, abused him, and threatened to kill him,” said a police officer.

Additional DCP (Central Noida) Rajiv Dixit said three teams were formed to arrest the accused at the earliest. Using CCTV footage and electronic surveillance, the men were nabbed.

A case under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 357, 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and 66 (E) of IT Act has been registered, said police.
