Shahjahanpur: Murder accused ‘shot dead while trying to escape from custody’

SHAHJAHANPUR police on Tuesday said they shot dead a 25-year-old murder accused as he tried to escape on the way to court in the Katra area of the city.

According to police, Sehbaz was arrested earlier in the day for allegedly stabbing to death a 35-year-old professor and injuring his family members during a robbery bid.

“After the medical examination, a police team was taking Sehbaz to court. The vehicle slowed down at Batlaiya village after stray animals came on the road. In the meantime, Sehbaz snatched the service pistol of a sub-inspector and jumped from the vehicle,” said Superintendent of Police (Shahjahanpur) Ashok Kumar Meena.

“Sehbaz fired on the police team and ran towards the field. Upon getting information about the incident, an additional police team rushed to the spot. On seeing the police team, Sehbaz opened fire. In retaliation, police also fired in which Sehbaz got injured. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead,” he added.

On Tuesday morning, assailants entered the house of Alok Gupta, a professor of a local private college, and stabbed him to death.

They also injured four family members of Gupta, including his father, brother and wife.
