Ahead of INDIA meeting, Uddhav Thackeray talks about choosing a coordinator for Opposition bloc

Ahead of the meeting of the INDIA bloc, Shiv Sena ( UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday stressed the need for a coordinator for the Opposition front even as he denied there were differences among member parties.

At the meeting of the INDIA bloc, being held after three and a half months, the Opposition parties are likely to talk about building consensus on choosing a convener apart from firming up seat-sharing plans ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election as well as have a discussion on caste census.

While addressing media persons in Delhi, Thackeray pointed out that George Fernandes and Sharad Yavad played the coordinator’s role for their respective fronts.

“Similarly, the coordinator would be a face for the INDIA front. It is necessary as every leader representing the front is busy with challenges in their states. The coordinator will ensure proper coordination and schedule,” he said.

“At the same time, let me clarify that the coordinator does not mean he or she will be the PM face,” he added.

Festive offer

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief said the 2024 Lok Sabha election is crucial for saving democracy and the country.

“Protecting democracy is crucial for us. Look at how things are happening in Parliament. MPs are being suspended. The working in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is no different. Therefore, I emphasise we have to come together and emerge stronger to counter the forces that thwart democracy,” said Uddhav Thackeray.

Asked if he would like to project himself as the PM candidate, the former Maharashtra chief minister dismissed it as a non-issue.

“My concern is Bharat and Maharashtra. I am not someone who hankers for power and post. The chief minister’s post was given to me. I never aspired to become the CM. I have no such ambitions of becoming the PM. Moreover, it is pointless. You strive to become PM but what about the people? What do they want?” he asked.

Uddhav Thackeray also said the preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha election will gain momentum in January next year with the polls scheduled to be held in April-May. “We have to contest together as INDIA front,” he added.
