Fake cops snatch $4,000 from Yemeni national in city for cancer treatment

IN the second such incident since April in Kondhwa, a 47-year-old Yemen national, who is in India on a medical visa, was defrauded of $4,000 by two suspects who, impersonating policemen, took the money from him on the pretext of inspecting the foreign currency he was carrying.

The incident comes five months after a 58-year-old Yemen national was cheated of $4,000 by three suspects who, also posing as policemen, searched his bag “for hashish”. Police are probing the possibility of involvement of the same suspects in both cases.

The latest incident took place around 6.30 pm on September 11 near Kausarbaug Masjid in Kondhwa Khurd. An FIR in the case was registered at Kondhwa police station late Monday night, a week after the incident when the victim approached the police with the help of locals.

The complainant in the case, a 47-year-old Yemen national, is currently in India on medical visa for his cancer treatment and lives in the area where the incident took place.

The FIR states that two suspects approached him when he was returning home after running errands. The two flashed “identity cards” saying they were cops. When the Yemen national told them he did not speak Hindi or English fluently, the ‘cops’ started speaking to him in Arabic. They claimed they wanted to inspect the money he was carrying and took $4,000 from him. Moments later, the duo fled from the spot with the cash.

In the April 9 incident, the three suspects travelling in a car had approached the 58-year-old victim. One of them had shown an ‘identity card’ claiming to be policemen. They said they had information that he was carrying hashish in his bag. The suspects frisked him, searched his bag and left. A while later the complainant realised that $4,000 he had in his bag was gone.

Senior Inspector Santosh Sonavane, in-charge of the Kondhwa police station, said, “We are working on clues including some commonalities in both cases. There is a possibility that the same suspects are involved in both cases.”
