Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty movie review: A delightful rom-com

After 2020’s Nishabdam, Anushka Shetty has returned to the silver screen with Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty. Cast opposite Anushka is Naveen Polishetty, best known for his work in Jathi Ratnalu and Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya. Director Mahesh Babu P is also making a comeback after his 2014 debut movie Ra Ra Krishnayya with Sandeep Kishan in the lead role.

Anvitha (Anushka Shetty) is a master chef in London. Her mother (Jaya Sudha) is fighting terminal cancer. Due to her mother’s bad marriage, Anvitha has lost trust in relationships and is determined to stay single. To fulfil her mother’s last wish, Anvitha brings her to India. The mother soon passes away, with an advice to Anvitha to embrace any relationship that might feel right and not be fearful due to what she may have seen in life.

Anvitha soon gets the idea of having a child outside of wedlock, using artificial insemination. She decides to find a sperm donor herself, having all the qualities she wants in her child. Helping her in the task is her friend Kavya (Sonia), who is also a victim of marital abuse. They both zero in on Sidhu (Naveen Polishetty), a software employee moonlighting as a stand-up comedian.

While Anvitha and Kavya are checking every aspect of Sidhu’s character and life, the latter assumes Anvitha’s romantic interest is genuine and falls in love with her. By the time Anvitha zeroes in on Sidhu for sperm donation, he proposes to her in a grand setting. Anvitha then reveals her actual interest in Sidhu, leaving him shocked. He rejects her proposal outright.

What happens to Anvitha’s plans of having a child without the bonds and complications of marriage/relationships? What happens to Sidhu’s love for Anvitha? How do they both understand and accept the viewpoints of the other person forms the rest of the story.

The odd nature of Anvitha’s desire is well laid out at the beginning of the story. The process of searching for the right person proceeds well. After the entry of Sidhu’s character, Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty is a laugh riot, with the film running like a stand-up show. The story becomes slow after Sidhu returns to Anvitha and fulfils her request. The film feels somewhat repetitive, with scenes leading to actual sperm donation. Since all of this is handled in a delicate manner, the scenes entertain mostly. Sidhu’s scenes of realisation, propelled through his father’s dialogues, Anvitha’s realisation of her love, and the union of the lovers all come out well. Kudos to writer-director Mahesh Babu P!

The comedy works both ways – to highlight a situation and give a new perspective to it, which makes the scenes engrossing. Naveen dominates the proceedings with great timing, excellent dialogue delivery and good screen presence. Anushka delivers a subtle performance. Abhinav Gomatam plays a nice foil to the hero. Murali Sharma and Tulasi are very natural in their roles.

Nirav Shah’s camera work is a visual treat. The production value is top-notch. A couple of songs by Radhan are good. Gopi Sundar’s background score elevates the mood during the climax effectively. Mahesh’s screenplay falters slightly in the second half, but his dialogues are excellent throughout.

Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty is a delightful romantic comedy that’s worth your money. This is a great comeback for Anushka and a hit again for Naveen.
