Sima Taparia calls people seeking divorce ‘egoistic’; says, ‘Highly educated girls don’t listen to anybody’

Soon after the release of the reality show Indian Matchmaking in 2020, matchmaker Sima Taparia was criticised for her controversial comments and problematic views. This sentiment continued even after the release of the show’s third season. In a recent interview with Mashable India, Sima discussed topics such as divorce, the differences between NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) and Indians, and other complex subjects.

Sima Taparia made remarks about the lifestyle differences between NRIs and Indians, particularly regarding household chores and domestic help. She said, “NRI’s can’t spread their wings everywhere because they have a lot of work to do. They have to do the house chores, drive their car, work in the office and cook for themselves. We are free birds in India, we are so lucky that we get domestic help here. So we can do many other things.”

Sima also made a colourist comment when discussing a matchmaking case involving a man from South India. She said, “There is a very influential family in the South, their son is very dark. In the South, people are generally dark. His mom’s criteria list was very long. But thankfully they got the girl they exactly wished for. Not many people have such criteria but who doesn’t want a beautiful daughter-in-law.”

In the same interview, she labeled those seeking divorce as egoistic, and said, “Those whom I have matched haven’t taken a divorce yet. But if it happened, it is because they don’t have patience, flexibility, no willingness to adjust and have egoism. That’s how problems are created. They don’t have the values of giving, sharing and caring.”

She didn’t stop there; she even called out highly educated, independent women for not conforming to others’ wishes. She said, “People are divorcing because there is no patience, no adjustment, egoism, ladkiya itana padh likh lete hai toh they say why should I listen to anybody (Highly educated girls don’t listen to anybody).”

Sima Taparia also revealed that she selectively chooses her matchmaking clients and doesn’t work with everyone. She said, “I do a lot matching for desis abroad, I get a lot of calls from people in the US. I don’t do matchmaking for Christians, Parsi and Muslims… mere pas hai nahi (I don’t have clients from these communities). But I choose and pick because I can’t do it for everybody. Jiska package aacha ho mereko usee type ka aaega na toh mein usse type ka match karte hu (I usually do matchmaking only for those who have good salary packages, because I only have those type of clients).”
