Jennifer Aniston swears by compression pants for weight reduction, but do they work?

When Jennifer Aniston changed into compression pants for a lymphatic drainage massage, she gave fans a peek into her post-workout routine. The 54-year-old actor posted a number of pictures from her summer on Instagram last week, including one that revealed her fitness routine.

The health-conscious star chose Body Ballancer compression trousers, which use pressure to drain fluid from the immune system’s lymphatic network to minimise swelling. Jennifer appeared calm and at ease throughout the process, spreading her arms and legs out flat on the floor of the gym.

These and other styles of compression leggings, which have been available for a while, claim to reduce cellulite, aid in weight reduction, enhance digestion, and strengthen the immune system.

By lying in an inflated compression garment that offers a light or firm massage, the procedure also allegedly helps to improve circulation and decongest the problem areas of the hips, thighs, and bottoms.

These are lofty claims, but do they hold true? Especially given that compression tights cost between $10,650 and $18,800 (₹8,50,000 to ₹15,00,000 approximately).

Do they work?

According to Ekta Singhwal, dietician, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, compression pants themselves do not directly reduce weight, but they can make you appear slimmer due to their compression effect. However, any weight loss would be minimal and temporary, primarily from water loss through increased sweating.

Compression pants may have a modest effect on lymphatic drainage. “The pressure they exert on the legs can potentially assist in moving lymphatic fluid, reducing swelling or edema in some cases. However, their impact is usually limited compared to other therapies prescribed by healthcare professionals,” she noted.

Although compression pants can offer benefits like improved circulation during exercise, reduced muscle soreness, and better muscle support, according to the expert, their effects on lymphatic drainage, weight reduction, and digestion are relatively minor and should not replace medical treatments or lifestyle changes for addressing specific health concerns.

Real-world evidence supporting these claims is limited, and individuals seeking significant health improvements should consult with a healthcare professional for personalised advice and treatment options.
