There is nothing quite like a wholesome bowl of chicken soup when you’re down with flu. These soups not only soothe the soul — providing both comfort and warmth — but they are also extremely healthy. And the best part is that every country has its own variety.
To pay tribute to this iconic dish, Taste Atlas, an experiential travel online guide, released its list of the ’10 Best Chicken Soups’ in the world. Any guesses as to what ranks first on the list?
Well, it’s none other than Tom kha gai, Thailand’s delicious national dish coming from the north, which is the only chicken soup ranked from Asia. Mainly dishes from Latin America and Eastern Europe dominate the list.
The popular food guide describes Tom kha gai as “a soup whose name translates to boiled galangal chicken soup, consisting of coconut milk, chicken chunks or shreds, galangal (reddish-brown or pink woody plant related to ginger), lemongrass, garlic, bird’s eye chili peppers, kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, and shiitake mushroom”.
According to the guide, Tom kha gai is highly nutritious with great medicinal properties, such as the ability to soothe the gastrointestinal tract.
Ciorba Radauteana and Zeama are second and third on the list, respectively. While Ciorba Radauteana is a traditional Romanian soup, Zeama is a traditional Moldovan soup, also known as the ‘ultimate hangover cure‘.

Made with a combination of chicken, onions, sweet red pepper, celery, carrots, lemon juice, garlic, parsley, and sour cream, Ciorba Radauteana is known for its healing properties, often used as a remedy for common cold symptoms. On the other hand, Zeama consists of homemade chicken broth that is prepared with a smaller whole chicken, water, thin homemade egg noodles (tăiței de casă), and a variety of finely chopped vegetables and herbs.
Another soup from Romania on the list is Supă (de pui) cu tăieței, which is fifth on the list. A classic winter dish, this clear soup is usually made with chicken stock, noodles, and vegetables (typically carrots). In many Romanian households, this soup is traditionally eaten on Sundays, for lunch or dinner. Considered a comfort food, the soup is usually eaten hot, garnished with chopped parsley and ground black pepper.
