Chef Kunal Kapur to conduct cooking class for First Ladies during G20 Summit: ‘I’ll showcase Indian food and cooking’

The national capital is all set to welcome leaders from around the world for the highly anticipated G20 summit scheduled to take place on September 9 and 10. Alongside a series of planned summit events, an exclusive cooking class led by renowned chef Kunal Kapur has been arranged for the First Ladies.

Calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”, Kunal told indianexpress.com that he feels blessed to represent India, and Indian food, art, and culture. “Cooking is not just an art, but also a superpower. Just like some people can fly or lift, my superpower is cooking. It’s very rewarding at the end of the day and all these years of hard work finally pays off by showcasing my talent with them,” he shared.

He told the outlet that he would not just be serving the First Ladies some authentic Indian dishes but also take them along on the cooking journey by conducting a special class. “I have the opportunity to cook for all the First Ladies who are coming for the G20 summit. I’ll be conducting a cooking class for them. What I am trying to do is showcase Indian food and Indian cooking, especially the use of Indian millets and how the ‘International Year of Millets’, declared by the UN and backed by the Indian Government, is so important,” Kunal said.

The Chef informed us that he will be using only locally sourced produce from Delhi-NCR while cooking. “Since it is something so intimate, I want to break certain norms that Indian food is too spicy and unhealthy. Millets was something that India was always eating a few decades ago and now the full circle has come in as we are going back to eating millets,” he said.

This is not the first time that Kunal will be cooking for foreign delegates in India. He told indianexpress.com that he had previously cooked for the First Ladies during the India-Africa Summit. “A few years back, there was an African Summit when 42 First Ladies of the African continent had come to Delhi. This time the guests are from across the globe so it’s very different. I think showcasing humble Indian food and its origin is going to be fantastic,” he said, expressing his excitement.

“I am going to make Mushroom Khichda. Khichda is usually cooked with meat, but we will not use meat at all. We will use mushrooms to give a meaty feel, but it will be 100 per cent vegetarian. We will also make Jowar Khichda and a beautiful broth with a salad alongside,” he said.

Further in the video, Kunal expressed his pride and admiration for the promotion of millets in the country. “Millets are important for our diet and beneficial for the climate as well as the soil. It is a proud moment for us to prepare these dishes for the First Ladies and talk about the Indian cuisine with them,” he said.
