The National Academy of Sciences here is busy in preparing an army of young environment scientists to fight problems like depleting water in rivers, and work on conservation of water resources and maintaining bio-diversity.
Students from three states — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh — will be trained by experts on the issue to find solutions. The Academy has already shortlisted 210 young scientists from different districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Allahabad, and a similar exercise is being undertaken in the other two states.
The shortlisted students from 100 schools in the three states will undergo training at a camp in Chennai, where experts will talk to them about dealing with environmental challenges. From Allahabad, 30 students of Tagore Public School have been selected for finding solutions to “future challenges” concerning the environment. Students from six other districts — Meerut, Agra, Pratapgarh, Farrukhabad, Sultanpur and Pilibhit — have been shortlisted. In all, students from 25 schools are to be selected for the purpose from the three states.

“These young scientists will be exempted from taking regular classes and the school managements have been asked to give them the pass percentage in their respective classes. They will undergo a special training in Chennai and Banglore where they will be briefed about efforts being made to help maintain bio-diversity and conserve natural resources,” said Neeraj Kumar, secretary of the Academy.
The Biotechnology Department at the Centre has entrusted the Academy with this responsibility and has also named the group of young environment scientists as the DNA Club (Department of Biotechnology and Natural Resources Awareness Club).

“It is a unique exercise that will help young minds to ponder over possible solutions to protect our environment from future challenges. We are happy that our school children have been selected for the cause,” said R N Dwivedi, principal of Tagore Public School.
