PAN-Aadhaar linking last date: All you need to know

June 30, Friday is the last date to link PAN with Aadhaar, according to the latest notification from the Ministry of Finance’s Department of Revenue. For linking the two cards, users will have to pay Rs 1,000.

The central government had earlier fixed the last date to link PAN and Aadhaar as March 31, 2023. However, the date was later extended to June 30. After today, if one fails to link their two cards by the deadline, their PAN will become inactive.

It is mandatory for all taxpayers to link their PAN number with Aadhaar. Capital markets regulator Sebi has also directed investors to link their PAN, which is the sole identification number for all transactions, with an Aadhaar number to continue doing transactions in the securities markets.

Why has the government made it mandatory for taxpayers to link their PAN with their Aadhaar?

The Centre made it mandatory to link two cards to have a robust way of de-duplication of the PAN database after the income-tax department came across instances where multiple permanent account numbers were allotted to one person or one PAN was allotted to more than one person.
