This yo-yo relationship between me and money was just not working out and I would often find myself in situations where I would scream out loud – “Hello money, why are you not by my side when I need you?”
Whenever I am sad, all I need are a warm hug, and a bag full of money. The hug isn’t that hard to find, but man, that bag! This, of course, is a joke. But in all seriousness, I understand the significance of wealth. I am a practical person (when not making bad jokes!) and I know the gravity of saving, having learned it the hard way. That is why I want to build up a nice little nest egg. Securing the future of my loved ones is my first priority. But it wasn’t always like this.
When I’d just started earning, I used to splurge and spend all my monthly salary in twenty odd days. As a result, when I actually needed the funds, I had no other option except requesting other people for a loan. Every time I saw something that looked good, my first impulse was to buy it. I never took any time to plan it. When I had it I carelessly splurged the money and when I didn’t, I cried and sacrificed all my wants and desires. This yo-yo relationship between me and money was just not working out and I would often find myself in situations where I would scream out loud – “Hello money, why are you not by my side when I need you?”

It was only when my daughter was born did it hit me hard. What if something happened to me? What would my daughter do? Who would take care of her? And even if all was fine, was it really fine? Could I give my daughter all I had always dreamt of giving her – the best schools, the best exposure to arts and culture, to travel with her around the world, to show her all that I did not have the opportunity to see when I was growing up. It hit me that although my daughter was born, I wasn’t fully prepared to be a mother.
My daughter is 5 years old now and I can say with some confidence that #DearMoney now you are always by my side. Because I invest you systematically every month, and I have enough insurance cover that ensures I sleep well at night. What’s more, my daughter and I live in our own 2 BHK that I bought when she turned 1, the EMI of which costs just about the same as the rent would have. And it makes me so happy that my daughter is growing up and making memories in a house that will always be hers.
