Orange alert issued for several districts in Tamil Nadu for next 2 days; fishermen advised not to venture into sea

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few areas for the next two days and light to moderate rainfall in coastal Tamil Nadu and delta regions for the next five days.

According to the bulletin issued by the weather department, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places in south Tamil Nadu as well at a few places over north Tamil Nadu, and heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday.

On Saturday, an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall) has been issued for four districts including Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkotai and Sivaganga while heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar districts.

On Sunday, the RMC has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts. At one or two places over Villupuram, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Karur, Theni and Dindigul districts, heavy rainfall is likely to occur.

Similarly, on December 18 and 19, heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai and Thanjavur districts.

Festive offer

Squally weather with wind speed of 40-45 kmph gushing upto 55 kmph is likely to prevail over southwest Bay of Bengal along and off Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area, Kerala coast and Lakshadweep area from December 15 to 18. Hence, fishermen are advised not to enter the sea during the four days.

As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy for the next 24 hours and moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas.
