Thane doctor found dead near his clinic, police register murder case

The body of a 65-year-old doctor who had been running a clinic in Maharashtra’s Thane for more than 20 years was found dumped with multiple injury marks a few metres from his workplace Tuesday morning, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Dr Sheeraz Khan, a resident of Mumbra, who ran his clinic in the Shil–Daighar area, they said.

According to the police, the doctor’s body bore several injury marks indicating that he had been murdered.

“Dr Khan resided near his clinic and had left the clinic late on Monday night after attending patients. He did not reach home and was found dead a few hours later by the local residents who alerted the family,” said an officer.

The police are scanning the CCTV footage in the area for vital clues about the sequence of events leading to the death. An officer said that they were also recording the statements of his family members to find out if anyone had a motive to murder the doctor.

Local MLA and former state minister Jitendra Awhad, after attending the funeral of the doctor on Tuesday, tweeted, “Attended funeral of Dr Sheeraz Khan, MBBS from Sir JJ Hospital. Dr. Sheeraz was a resident of Mumbra who was serving people for more than 20 years. Last night he left his clinic at around 1-1:15 AM and then he was found unconscious near a lake at Khardi Road with fatal wounds all over his body.”

Awhad also blamed the poor law and order situation in the city as the police failed to get any vital clues from the CCTV footage. “Last he was seen leaving his clinic, post that there is no footage of him in any of the CCTV cameras, God only knows where the CCTV cameras were installed on which crores of public money was spent! Law and order situation is gone for a toss in this city,” he posted.

He further said the murder of the doctor should be a wake-up call for the authorities. “With a heavy heart I paid homage to Doctor Sheeraz Khan today. I wish all strength for the bereaved family. In a few days I will meet the commissioner of Thane and discuss the progress of the investigation on this case. We want an early and thorough investigation of this gruesome murder. Culprits should be caught and sent to gallows,” he tweeted.
