Amruta Fadnavis extortion case: Most pending cases against main accused Anil Jaisinghani withdrawn or settled, court told

In its detailed order granting bail to alleged bookie Anil Jaisinghani, who was arrested in March for reportedly trying to blackmail and extort Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta, a special court took into consideration that most of the criminal cases pending against him are withdrawn or settled.

Jaisinghani was alleged to have been on the run for many years with as many as 17 cases pending against him. While seeking bail in the case filed by Amruta, Jaisinghani’s lawyers gave the special court a list of the status of the pending cases.

“The advocate of the accused (Jaisinghani) also produced list of entire 17 cases with date of bail / closure report filed by the investigation. Perusal of list, it appears that most of the cases are already compounded/withdrawn,” special judge D D Almale said in his order passed on Monday, which was made available on Wednesday.

The court also considered that Jaisinghani was granted bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court earlier this month in a case filed in the state. He has also been granted bail in July in the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Ahmedabad.

On Monday, the court in Mumbai granted Jaisinghani bail on execution of a surety of Rs 50,000 in connection with the case filed by Malabar Hill police station on charges including extortion, criminal conspiracy, and relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act on Amruta’s complaint. His bail applications in two other cases filed against him by the Saki Naka and Azad Maidan police in Mumbai are still pending.

In March, the Malabar Hill police had filed an FIR against Jaisinghani and his daughter Aniksha on Amruta’s complaint. The police had claimed that Aniksha, posing as a designer, had gained access to Amruta in 2021 and insisted that she wear clothes and jewellery provided by her at events.

Subsequently, Aniksha allegedly offered a bribe of Rs 1 crore to Amruta, seeking her intervention in dropping the cases against her father. The police claimed that after Amruta Fadnavis refused and blocked her phone, Aniksha threatened to leak her videos and sought Rs 10 crore as extortion money.

Jaisinghani’s lawyers Sudeep Pasbola and Swarali Jogalekar had submitted that the chargesheet in the case has been filed and the investigation is completed. “…taking into account, nature of the offence, punishment provided by the for the said offence and fact that charge sheet has been filed, I am of view that accused is entitled for the bail,” the court said.
